History

Named after Benjamin Franklin, a friend of Dr. Hugh Williamson (of Williamson County), Franklin was founded in 1799. Williamson County was considered one of the most affluent in the state up until the Civil War. The Battle of Franklin occurred in 1864, and resulted in thousands of casualties. Like many other southern towns and cities, it took many years for Franklin to recover from the war. Franklin is now the 9th largest city in the state, and is considered to be one of the wealthiest.

Franklin’s beautiful and award-winning historic downtown has a variety of shops and restaurants covering fifteen blocks. Another popular shopping area is Cool Springs Galleria, which offers 150 stores. The Factory at Franklin is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and offers locally owned shops and restaurants. Franklin has also been recognized for its great antique shopping. Urbanspoon has included Whitt’s Barbeque, Sperry’s, Chuy’s, Sweet CeCe’s, and Molinari’s as some of Franklin’s best restaurants.

Parks and Recreation

Franklin has 16 parks with amenities such as trails, playgrounds, sports fields and courts and more. Franklin hosts many festivals and parades, including The Main Street Festival, Fourth of July celebration, PumpkinFest, Veterans Day Parade, and Dickens of a Christmas. There are historic Antebellum and Victorian homes, including the Carter House and Carton Plantation and Lotz House Museum. Visitors can enjoy a walking tour of Downtown Franklin, Franklin On Foot.

Franklin’s accolades have made it a desirable place to live. For acute medical needs, Williamson Medical Center and Community Health Systems serve the city. In transportation, Franklin Transit Authority provides public transportation. Smyrna Airport and Nashville International Airport are minutes away. Franklin’s major roads are Interstate 65, and Routes 431, 31, 96, 246.
