Murfreesboro & Rutherford County School Information
Named one of "The Best Places to Raise Your Kids" by Business Week in Nov 2008, Murfreesboro and Rutherford County continue to grow at five times the national average. One of the main reasons is the outstanding educational system found here. "When compared to other school districts in the state, we are among the best. Education is a big draw, and if we didn't have a good schools program, our county would not be growing the way that it is," says James Evans, spokesman for Rutherford County Schools. In the Tennessee Department of Education's 2007 Report Card, Rutherford County earned some of the highest scores of all the districts statewide. Enrollment has increased each year by an average of 1,500 students and the system manages to keep the teacher-student ratio of 1 -22 for primary grades and 1-30 for middle and high school.
Children living in the city attend through the 6th grade then continue on to county middle and high schools. "One of the things that draws people here is our foundation of outstanding teachers," says Marilyn Mathis, director of city schools. The city school system earned six A's and three B's on the state's 2007 Report Card. They maintain a teacher-student ratio of 1-20.
Both systems offer unique opportunities for their students. For example, in Murfreesboro, Bradley Academy offers an award winning art focused curriculum while the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce offers programs that bring the business community and the schools together. Summer business camp, adopt-a-school, and job shadowing are some of the programs that help students develop and apply their skills and make them better prepared for the future.
